Voice Lessons: Teaching Style and Approach
"Use the talents you possess, for the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except the best."
~Henry Van Dyken |
It is a common misconception that "through training the voice you are changing the voice." In actuality, developing vocal technique provides opportunity to unlock the true potential in your singing abilities, enhancing your natural voice by freeing it to grow in beauty, agility, and strength. Singers are vocal athletes, training over sixty individual muscles to function together smoothly. Through melodic expression, you will learn to connect music to your emotions and let your creativity soar!

| Vocal Technique |
| Singers of all ages will learn to support their voices' natural vibrancy through utilizing:
Level-appropriate knowledge of vocal anatomy will be combined with creative imagery, providing a well-rounded, comprehensive education of the voice and its functions. Many singers lock up their voice by controlling it through tension. Students will be taught to release all tension, singing instead with an open, relaxed throat and unrestrained air flow, resulting in pure and natural vocal tone. Rather than attempting to make a singer’s voice ‘bigger’, attention will be directed toward working with the full capacities of breath support and resonance, connecting the larynx to bodily support and singing with energy in place of forcefulness.
| Singing Style |
|
|
Singing can be a deeply personal experience, and specific attention will be devoted to selecting repertoire to which students can relate. There are a wide variety of genres to explore, including:
- Folk
- Broadway
- Classical
- Traditional
- Sacred
- Spiritual
- Seasonal/Holiday
Through cultivating unique style and musical flair, individual personalities will shine through and deliver sparkling musical renditions!
| A Healthy Singing Approach |
|
|
Vocal students will be taught how to protect their voices and use them to sing without tension in an appropriate, healthy manner, resulting in vocal versatility and freedom. Individuals who love to sing will profit immensely from learning solid vocal technique. The voice, a delicate instrument easily abused, can be best protected if a singer learns to train the voice responsibly in a healthy manner. Developing awareness of abusive vocal situations is also necessary in ppreserving the health and purity of a singer's voice.
