The Benefits of Learning the Violin (or any Other Musical Instrument)

Although for most people playing the violin is very self-fulfilling, the benefits of learning a musical instrument go far beyond mere enjoyment.  Many students will not become world-renowned performers, travelling the world with their instrument in tow; rather, the majority will go on to study as firemen, mechanics, teachers, etc. However, one of the greatest advantages of investing in your youngster’s musical education is that the skills they attain through music will benefit them throughout their entire life, no matter which profession they pursue.

Planning Ahead:
When we prepare for a recital, or any event, I guide students through the process of breaking down their pieces into manageable steps and goals.  Each week, we build on what was practised in the last, allowing students the chance to calmly work towards their deadline without any frenzied last minute panic.  This process includes picking out the weak spots in the piece, focusing on them, and strengthening them, so at the end of the procedure we procure a shiny, polished product.  These skills apply to student’s everyday life as well: school, commitments, and eventually the work force.

Benefits Brain Development:
Music serves as a nurturing factor in children’s brain development. Scientists are of the opinion that children who have exposure to, or study music do better in school than those who do not.  Furthermore, studies have indicated that music exposure benefits students in their reading, language processing, and reasoning skills.

Teaches Discipline/Dedication:
Students who want to make progress in their musical studies employ much time and effort practising their skill.  Some students grasp this principle from the beginning, while others take a little more coaxing; however, I strive to teach the value of good effort, and in doing so, students learn the value of discipline and dedication. This attained skill of diligence applies to every area of a student’s life, including school.

Develops A Sense of Achievement:
Playing a musical instrument has its frustrating moments, yet during lessons, students acquire skills to work through those difficulties.  Eventually, the nails-on-the-chalkboard scale, the piece that caused a student to want to break his instrument against a wall, or the section of that song that drove his parents crazy will start to sound less scratchy, more melodic, and much more like music.  At this point the student gains confidence, assurance, and self-esteem, because everyone needs to feel good about something, and the student just gained that sense of achievement.  At Musical Memories, we strive to celebrate victories, both great and small, to help students gain the certitude they will need for life.

Relieves Stress:
Do you have a son or daughter who has problems at school due to bullies, peer pressure, or difficulty with grades? Playing a musical instrument also provides an emotional outlet for students.  Concentration on a musical element offers a channel through which stress, frustrations, and disappointments are released.

Music Can Be Enjoyable and Opens Opportunities:
Yes, the practice can be boring, the noise can be suffocating, and all they want to do sometime is slam that instrument against the wall, but in the long run, playing music can be enjoyable. Playing a musical instrument also creates a social field for students.  By playing together in duets, trios, or small groups, students form a common ground on which friendships may begin, while enforcing cooperation and leadership skills.

These are only a few of the many examples of the assets of music, but I hope through them you might see the influence music could have on your child through their childhood, youth, and eventually into adulthood.  Not only is music a gift which will stay with them forever, but the values it teaches them will positively impact them for the rest of their lives!
